What is a Speech Pathologist?
Speech Pathologists diagnose and treat communication disorders in children, including difficulties with speaking, listening, processing and understanding language, reading, writing, social skills and stuttering. They also work with babies and children who have feeding difficulties.
We support children in the following areas of communication:
Speech – how clearly and fluently we talk.
Language Understanding – how well we process and understand what is said to us.
Language Use – how well we use words and sentences to communicate with others.
Literacy – the skills needed for reading and writing. They include such things as awareness of the sounds of language, awareness of print, and the relationship between letters and sounds.
Social Skills - the skills we use to communicate and interact with each other, both verbally and non-verbally, through gestures, body language and our personal appearance.
